First Grade Classroom

 

Welcome to first grade!

I hope that your child is enjoying their first grade experience! What a great group of kids! Please watch for a newsletter to come home each Friday. It will give you an overview of all of the things we are working on right now in our classroom.

Homework

Each week, your child will bring home a word wall word homework packet. There is a page for each day, Monday through Thursday.  Please send each page back to school the following day in your child's BBT folder.  If you do not receive this packet, please call me so that I can send another one home with your child. A spelling list will also come home. These are the words that we are studying at school for the week. Please help your child practice these for a few minutes each night.  Your child will be tested over the spelling list and the word wall words each Friday morning. Finally, each evening, your child will have one page of math homework as well. Please sit with your child as they complete these assignments, as they may need your help. In all, nightly homework should take about a half hour nightly.

 

Here are some ways that you can help support your child with what we are doing in school:

1. Read, Read, Read!!! Read with your child, to your child, let them read to you... a good goal would be for the two of you to spend about twenty minutes a day doing this.

2. Keep the "flashcards" that come home with the word wall words printed on them. Have your child practice reading them, practice spelling them to you, and practice writing them.

3. Have your child count large sets of objects, for example a handfull of buttons, or pennies. Your job is to sit with them and watch and listen to them so you can ensure that they do this correctly. Count these objects by ones, twos, fives, and tens.

4. Give your child a "practice" spelling test on Thursday night so they are ready and confident on Friday when we do the "real" one in class.
