MRS. LAVIGNE
Teaching first grade is something I really enjoy. It is amazing how much 6 and 7 year olds are capable of learning in one year. Most of them come in September able to read and write very few words and by May are reading almost anything they can get their hands on. We spend most of our day learning about words, numbers, and how to get along with others. Our days seem to fly by with all things we have to get through. If your child seems tired when they get home, they probably are!
SPECIALS
PROJECTS
We are taking part in the Pizza Hut Book It! program this year. Please set aside some time every night to read with your child. Just 10 minutes a night will meet the goal for the month. This is a great way to get your child in the habit of reading just for fun!
READING
We spend more than two hours a day learning how to read! That is a lot of time but there is so much to learn we feel it is a good use of this time. We learn how to figure out unkown words, how to read so it sounds like talking and how to make sure we understand what we are reading. During this block of time we read as a whole group, we read with a partner and we read independently. While all this reading is going on I work with a small group to focus in on what they need to work on to meet our end of year reading goals.
WRITING
We spend most of the year writing what we call small moment stories. These are stories about real things that happen in our lives. We first learn how to get our thoughts on paper using pictures and words. Then we talk about what real authors do and how we can be just like real authors. We learn how to add details, important information and dialogue to make our stories more interesting for the reader. Later in the year we will learn how to write poetry and non fiction pieces.
MATH
We spend the majority of our math time working with numbers. We practice counting and writing numbers to 110, we learn addition and subtraction facts and problem solving strategies.
SCIENCE
Our first science unit teaches us about living things. When we complete this unit we will be taking a field trip to John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids. Some of our other units teach us about land, water, weather, how to stay fit and healthy and everyone's favorite unit magnets.
