International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a rigorous college preparatory course of study for highly motivated high school students. The program features a comprehensive curriculum that contains both breadth and depth in its focus. The IB program of studies provides students of various linguistic, cultural and educational backgrounds with the intellectual, social, critical thinking skills, and international perspective necessary for the adult world.

The IB Mission Statement

The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. For information on the IB-DP & MYP programs, visit www.ibo.org.

How is the IB diploma different from a high school diploma?

A high school diploma is based on requirements set forth by the state of Michigan and the Muskegon Public Schools Board of Education. Each student in the IB program will meet the requirements to earn a high school diploma.

The IB diploma is a separate diploma based on international guidelines set forth by the IB program. These are guidelines followed by every school in the world that offers the IB program. Students can earn the IB diploma by meeting the guidelines set forth by the IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization).

Students can earn both a high school diploma and an IB diploma.

What courses will a student take in the Diploma Programme?

What preparation is needed to succeed in the Diploma Programme?

Any student interested in the Diplomma Programme needs to be highly motivated. Students will need to develop good reading and writing skills as well as good study habits. Students have the opportunity to enroll in honors courses during their 9th and 10th grades. These courses serve as a good foundation to develop the necessary skills to be successful in the Diploma Programme. Students need to be at level II in a foreign language by the beginning of their 11th grade year. Students should have also completed algebra I and geometry if they wish to take the IB Math Studies (SL) OR geometry and algebra II if they wish to take the IB Mathematics (SL/HL).

Students must also meet the graduation requirements by completing physical education, health, and freshman seminar.

In addition, each student needs to have a desire to challenge him/herself intellectually and academically, possess or be willing to acquire good time management skills, be open to new ideas and participate in school and community activities.

How else are we preparing students for the Diploma Program? The Middle Years Program!

Muskegon High School has partnered with Bunker and Steele middle schools to offer a concurrent program of study for grades 6 through 10. The three schools are in the candidacy phase of the application process with the International Baccalaureate organization and are awaiting authorization this fall of 2010.
