Greetings!
Hello and welcome to Muskegon High School Athletics! Muskegon High School has a strong tradition in interscholastic athletics dating back to the early 20th century. Currently, the department offers 37 teams competing in 23 varsity sports for both boys and girls. In fact, Muskegon High School has been named one of Sports Illustrated's top athletic programs nationally!
Although our teams have captured 19 state titles over the years, the true purpose of the athletic program is to provide educational opportunities to eligible students that cannot be attained in the traditional classroom. The athletics classroom teaches sportsmanship, perseverance, self-confidence, healthy choices, discipline, positive attitude and much more.
We invite you to attend one of our 550 contests during the school year to see for yourself the discipline and effort it takes to be a Big Red!
Yours in Educational Athletics,

Michael D. Watson, CAA
Director of Athletics

Muskegon to take part in the 2008 "Big Day Prep Showdown IV" vs. MLK
Rynearson Stadium - Eastern Michigan University
Friday, August 29, 2008
In what will be a rematch of the schools that played in the 1989 MHSAA Class 'A' Final, the Muskegon Big Reds will square off against 2007 Div. II sftate champion, Detroit Martin Luther King High School.
In their previous meeting on November 25, 1989, The Crusaders and Big Reds met at the Pontiac Silverdome to determine the state's Class 'A' champion. Martin Luther King was considered by some to be the finest football team ever produced by the Detroit Public School League. Ranked #1 in the state leading up to the game, the Crusaders were led by running back Ed Davis and quarterback Zolton Hall while Dave Taylor's squad featured Marcus Longmire, Bill Maybanks, Derrick Bailey and possibly the best defense in Michigan regardless of class.
Sparked by Longmire's then-record second half kickoff return of 89 yards, the Big Reds laid claim to the 1989 championship, beating King 16-13.
