The Bunker International Community Peace Garden

The Bunker International Community Peace Garden was created thanks to the Big Red Education Fund. At the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, Mr. Paul Kurdziel submitted a grant proposal to the Big Red Education Fund committee, and, happily, it was accepted--for the amount of $2500.00!

The garden serves many purposes for the Bunker Community. First, the greenscape enhances the courtyard's appearance behind Bunker Middle School, which was once just sand and concrete. Second, all of the plants used for the project are native Michigan shrubs, grasses, and flowers, which means they actually improve the environment in which they are planted because they require little of the usual things needed to sustain a garden, water and fertilizer, yet they still do the extremely important task of turning carbon dioxide into oxygen. Third, the garden will have objects symbolic of peace both national and international. Finally, the students from Mrs. Chaffin's and Mr. Davros' classes, student leadership, some staff, and a parent volunteer actually planted the garden as you will see in the photographs students took while we were planting. As you peruse the photos, you will see "before" and "after" pictures, too.

A special thanks goes to the Big Red Education Fund, Barry's Greenhouse, Wildtype Nursery, and R&R Landscaping for their generosity in helping to make our garden a reality. As the plants mature, more photos will be added to this site.
