Definition of Integrated Therapy

Integrated therapy occurs in the natural settings where students need to practice the functional skills that are difficult for them to perform. For example, therapy may occur in the cafeteria during lunch, in the gym during physical education, or in the classroom during writing instruction.

Services are delivered with a combination of direct, monitor, and consultative services. For example, the therapist may work directly with the student, modeling strategies and communicating with the classroom staff, so that techniques can be practiced daily with the student. By working in the natural environment, communication and collaboration among staff members is greatly increased, therapists can continuously evaluate student needs in a variety of school environments and students do not miss valuable instruction time.
